Last fall, Harland Brewing quietly closed its One Paseo tasting room in Carmel Valley. This January, the same company opened its first full-service restaurant of any kind at 16480 Paseo del Sur in 4S Ranch. That sequence is the story of 2026 dining in North County so far: the coast lost a taproom, and 4S Ranch got the flagship.
If you live here, you already sensed the shift walking through 4S Commons Town Center. Miguel's Cocina, an anchor tenant since the center opened, is gone. In its place, a Mark Wahlberg restaurant. A breakfast concept out of Orange County is prepping a Dove Canyon Road buildout. The town center that residents have used for weekend groceries and school-night takeout is being repositioned as a destination that people from Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe will drive to.
Here is what actually opened, what is coming, and how the pieces fit together for anyone who lives within a five-minute drive.
Harland is a serious San Diego brewery. The company's 37,000 square-foot core brewing facility and headquarters is in Scripps Ranch, and it has run tasting rooms in Bay Park and South Park for years. When the founders decided to expand from tasting rooms into full-service hospitality, the natural bet would have been the coast, or Little Italy, or one of the food-hall developments downtown.
They picked 4S Ranch.
The 4S Ranch location is Harland's fourth and its first full-service restaurant with all-day dining, opening Friday, January 30, 2026. The space runs 3,400 square feet at 16480 Paseo del Sur, Suite 105, with hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. CEO Jeff Hansson, a Rancho Bernardo resident, said the goal was to create a place that truly works for the whole family. That is a specific statement of intent, and it lines up with the interior choices: a mid-century-inspired aesthetic featuring high ceilings, abundant natural light, terrazzo bar tops, breeze-block dividers, greenery, and a flagstone mosaic wall.
The menu is where the family-plus-brewery balance shows up:
The strategic read matters for anyone who lives here. Harland closed its One Paseo tasting room in Carmel Valley last year, a move that aligns with its pivot toward fewer but more hospitality-forward destinations. In addition to the 4S Ranch restaurant, Harland is also planning a full-service restaurant and taproom at the Mission Bay Golf Course. The company is placing bets where it thinks the sustained neighborhood traffic is. 4S Ranch cleared that bar. Carmel Valley did not.
"I live locally here, and we wanted to bring something special to the neighborhood that everyone could enjoy," Hansson told KUSI ahead of the opening.
The Miguel's Cocina space at 10514 Craftsman Way was one of the most heavily used tables in the neighborhood for two decades. That is now a Mark Wahlberg restaurant.
Flecha Cantina's San Diego address is 10514 Craftsman Way in 4S Commons Town Center, making 4S Ranch the third Flecha location after Huntington Beach and Las Vegas. A soft opening happened on a Tuesday and the space was converted quickly from Miguel's Cocina, with the dining room feeling familiar yet refreshed and the restaurant expected to be fully up and running by the weekend.
At roughly 7,000 square feet, the space plans to pair elevated plates such as mole enchiladas, braised short ribs and sea bass with grapefruit chimichurri with a taqueria program serving vampiro, veganos, pork belly and queso birria tacos. The bar is tequila-forward, and weekend brunch is on the plan.
The interesting question is not whether the food is good. It is what the swap means for the character of the town center. Miguel's was a Mexican-food chain built for family repeat business. Flecha is a celebrity-operator restaurant with Huntington Beach and Vegas siblings. The rent that space can support probably went up. The kind of table you book on a Saturday night at 4S Commons is now different from what it was in 2024.
If you have a birthday coming up and you were reflexively going to book Capri Blu, walk the extra hundred feet and look at the Flecha menu first. It is a new option in a category the neighborhood previously did not have inside walking distance.
The third data point is smaller but tells you where the demand curve is heading. EggBred, a fast-casual breakfast and brunch restaurant specializing in handcrafted breakfast sandwiches, is preparing to open at 16621 Dove Canyon Road, having submitted documents to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality. The 4S Ranch restaurant will be owned by franchise owners Armando Ponce Perez and Mariela Ponce.
EggBred was founded in 2020 by CEO Albert Shim, who developed the concept after years working in the food industry and operating successful food truck businesses. The brand focuses on breakfast sandwiches made with fresh ingredients, including fresh cracked eggs, house-made sauces, proprietary protein blends, and baked goods sourced from local bakeries.
Breakfast is the meal 4S Ranch has been thin on. Between the Ralphs coffee bar, a couple of chains, and Jimbo's prepared food, there has not been an obvious sit-down or grab-and-go breakfast sandwich stop that residents can build a Tuesday morning routine around. EggBred is a franchise operator's read on that gap. Watch to see whether it draws the school-drop-off crowd from the Design39 and Stone Ranch pickup zones.
| Restaurant | Address | Status | What to Try |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harland Brewing Co. | 16480 Paseo del Sur, Suite 105 | Open since Jan 30, 2026 | Braised short rib, kung pao Brussels sprouts, weekend brunch |
| Flecha Cantina | 10514 Craftsman Way (4S Commons) | Soft opened; grand opening pending | Queso birria tacos, mole enchiladas, sea bass with grapefruit chimichurri |
| EggBred | 16621 Dove Canyon Road | Permitting; opening date TBD | Handcrafted breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos |
The old rotation for a lot of 4S Ranch households looked something like this: Ralphs run, Jimbo's for anything organic, Miguel's for a family dinner, Karl Strauss when someone wanted a beer. All within walking distance of the same parking lot.
Two of those four anchors just changed identity or got neighbors. The rotation is worth rebuilding on purpose rather than by habit.
A few suggested moves:
4S Commons Town Center sits at the heart of the master-planned community as a 53-acre destination with over 50 curated retailers, and it has anchored the neighborhood since the homes were finished in the early 2000s. What is happening in 2026 is not a full reinvention. Jimbo's, Ralphs, Karl Strauss, the library, and the CVS are all still there doing what they have always done.
What changed is the tenant mix at the higher-check-average end. A national celebrity brand replaced a regional chain. A serious San Diego brewery chose a Paseo del Sur storefront over a coastal one for its biggest hospitality bet yet. A franchise operator saw enough breakfast demand to sign a lease on Dove Canyon.
If you live here, that is worth paying attention to for reasons that go beyond where to eat on Friday. The businesses opening in a neighborhood are one of the clearest reads on where operators think the money and the daily foot traffic are heading over a five-to-ten-year window. Harland signed a 10-year lease with an additional 10-year option. That is a two-decade bet on 4S Ranch as a place people will keep showing up.
Try the new places. Notice which ones are packed on a Tuesday versus which ones are only busy on Saturday. That is the neighborhood telling you what it wants to be next.
